The Edward H. McCabe preserve consists of 143 acres and approximately one mile of river frontage along the banks of the Broadkill River in rural east-central Sussex County near the town of Milton. A canoe trail links the historic town of Milton with The Nature Conservancy’s Edward H. McCabe Nature Preserve. The Milton-McCabe Preserve Greenway is a peaceful two-mile stretch of the Broadkill River meandering through dense forests and lush marshes. At the preserve, the canoe trail joins a three-mile hiking trail system that passes through the diversity of habitats on the preserve.

NATURE CENTERS & WILDLIFE REFUGES

Home of the Delaware Nature Society, this environmental education complex is clustered around a preserved gristmill that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The complex includes two modern nature center buildings, a barn, a nature trail with observation tower, and a boat ramp on Abbott's Pond. Facilities are available for community use and retreats. Located on Sussex Route 620, south of Route 36 near Milford. Open Monday through Friday. Tours are free, but programs are by fee. 302-422-0847.

At Ashland Nature Center, near Hockessin in New Castle County, you can explore four self-guiding nature trails on 200 acres of meadow, marsh, pond and forest. A native plant garden showcases a variety of plants that provide food and shelter for wildlife. Inside, visitors will find exhibits focusing on habitats and a children's discovery corner, and murals depicting changes in the landscape during the past four centuries.

Bombay Hook NWR, located on the western shore of Delaware Bay 8 miles southeast of Smyrna, Delaware, was established in 1937 to provide habitat for migratory waterfowl. Objectives have since broadened to include other migratory birds, a diversity of other native wildlife species and wildlife-oriented public use.  Recreational activities include biking, hiking, hunting, and wildlife viewing.

Prime Hook NWR is located 22 miles southeast of Dover, Delaware, near the western shore of Delaware Bay. The refuge was established to conserve an important segment of the Delaware Bay marshes, to protect migrating and wintering waterfowl habitat. The refuge is considered to have one of the best existing wetland habitat areas along the Atlantic Coast.  Recreational activities include boating, fishing, hiking, hunting, and wildlife viewing.

Central Delaware’s natural wonders are on display at the St. Jones Estuarine Research Reserve, a state-of-the-art environmental research center on the St. Jones River south of Dover. A new educational center on-site offers hands-on nature programs, children’s programs, nature trails, canoe trips and educational boat trips for the public year-round to allow visitors to learn about the tidal St. Jones River. A boardwalk trail winds through the marshes and forests along the river behind the center.

A volksmarch is a non-competitive 6 mile (10 kilometer) walk. It's not a pledge walk, it's not a race, it is a fun activity you do with a club, with your family, with your pet, or all by yourself. Volksmarching got its name from its origins in Europe. There are over 500 volkssport clubs throughout the USA, and many thousands around the world. Local clubs host the walking events. The club members select a trail for safety, scenic interest, historic areas, natural beauty and walkability. The museum features artifacts and exhibits that tell the rich history of the Delaware Nanticoke Indian Tribe and others nationwide, with an extensive Native American library. The community holds its annual two-day Powwow in September, with ceremonial dancing and music, storytelling, Native American crafts and food. Nutter D. Marvel Carriage Museum -- http://www.marvelmuseum.org/

A collection of local structures, including barns, a school, church, and blacksmith shop, is the setting for a display of memorabilia and photographs of old Georgetown and Sussex County. Twenty antique horse-drawn carriages, assembled by Mr. Marvel and donated to the Town of Georgetown after his death in 1988, are on display. Built in 1801 by the son of one of Delaware's signers of the Declaration of Independence, the Read House exhibits the height of Federal grandeur.  This 22 room, 14,000 square-foot, mansion was the largest house in Delaware when built, and cost George Read Jr. nearly $12,000 to complete (approximately $2.5 million today).

The Governor Ross Mansion north of Seaford on North Pine Street is a brick Italian Villa style structure featuring a three-story center entry.  Built in 1859, the plantation includes rebuilt log slave quarters that are the only remaining slave quarters as far north as Delaware.  Owned and operated by the Seaford Historical Society, it is open for tours the fourth Sunday of each month from 1-4 p.m. or by reservation other times.

The mansion was built from 1909 to 1910 and is a fine example of a French chateau in the style of Louis XVIth. Containing 102 rooms, the estate looms over the surrounding formal gardens and is furnished with fine antiques, famous works of art, beautiful tapestries, and other treasures. The grounds surrounding the mansion extend for one third of a mile along the main vista from the house, and are among the finest examples of French-style gardens in the United States.

The Parson Thorne Mansion, built between 1730 and 1735, was once home to Milford’s founder, Parson Sydenham Thorne, and also to John M. Clayton, noted Delaware statesman. The brick home is unusual, having undergone a transformation in architecture from Colonial, to Georgian, to Victorian during its history. Period antiques and reproductions reflect the changing styles as the home remained a focal point of Milford.

Originated in 1976 during the bicentennial celebration, the "Trees of the States" exhibit is a self-guided walking tour of the official state tree from each of the United States. Each tree is identified with a marker noting its scientific classification and state of origin. A walking tour brochure is available. WILMINGTON RIVERFRONT ATTRACTIONS

This 1.3-mile riverfront path provides pedestrian access to attractions from Tubman-Garrett Riverfront Park to the Shipyard Shops.  Strollers can enjoy extensive native plantings with more than 5,000 trees and shrubs, 36,000 grasses, perennials and annuals, and 27,600 wetland plants.
